    Don the Beachcomber was recommended to us based on the view, and that was definitely the best part of the experience. We booked a table right at sunset - we used OpenTable to book, and they didn't have our reservation on their list. Luckily, they were able to seat us anyway. The view was great, though I would say the food was mediocre, especially considering the high cost of it. I had ordered a salad and the wrong one came out; when I commented to our server, he said 'well this is the one I wrote down' and begrudgingly took it back. I appreciate that mistakes and miscommunications happen, but I'm certain of the one I ordered, as the one came out was one I'd have never selected. Granted, even if I had misspoken, our server's response put me off. I've worked in customer service a long time and sometimes you just have to suck it up and put on your 'the customer is always right' face, even when you think it was their error and not your own. I would probably come back here to the bar for drinks, but I don't know that I would come back for dinner again.

    We ate at the bar, and the food was well-priced...not too high. I had the ahi sashimi and it was of the utmost quality. I also ordered the mai tai, and it was about as strong as the Hulk. The visit was complete with as our table gave us a sublime sunset view.

    LOVED this place. It was also right next door to our condo so we enjoyed just waltzing over there whenever. They had good happy hours and great strong drinks. I love me fish tacos so I ordered those and the corn tortillas were overflowing with fish and avocado and lettuce etc. Went here at least 3x and saw a few sunsets during that time as well. The wait staff did not move as fast as they do in the states but who cares.. it really is Hawaii time there so you just relax and enjoy the wonderful scenery...

    My wife and and I went to Dons last night and had the two person special which consisted of appetizer, bottle of wine, prime rib and dessert, all of which was very good although the house wine was just OK. The view was wonderful and the service excellent. The server (Douglas) was very attentive as were the rest of the staff. There was a wedding going on and we were able to see the Hawaiian show right next to us which made the dinner more pleasant. All in all, my wife said it was the best evening and dinner we had in Kailua in the last 3 weeks.

    4.5* Highlights: - Fantastic 360 degree view of the ocean. No matter where you sit you'll be able to see, hear, and smell the ocean! You can even catch the sunset from this place. - The Food: We got the quesadillas and coconut shrimp. Both very good. The quesadillas were super loaded with cheese and grilled to a perfect crispy on the outside. The coconut shrimp was also very well done. Perfect golden brown and crispy on the outside, and nice and tender on the inside. Served with a fantastic mango sauce. MMMMM Plus pretty decent portion sizes for both dishes. - The drinks: you must try at least one (or two or three) drinks from the Mai Tai menu. Again decent size drinks with lots of booze and fantastic flavours. I tried the "Original", "Navy Grog", and the "Quencher" all three fantastic! - Lastly, you get all of this with reasonable prices (almost every item is under $10) and great service. If you're in Kona, you must go to to this place!

    OMG. We came down here a couple of times. On our first night we came late and they were going to close the bar soon so we ordered 3 each of Don's Own Mai Tai drinks. The waitress stopped us and said it's illegal for them to serve more than 2 mai-tais at once because each mai-tai has 3 shots in it (whoa)!!! So we ordered 2 mai-tais....or 6 shots. The bf gulped down his first drink and admitted even for him, it was pretty strong. I took a sip of mine. She wasn't kidding. That drink was loaded with so much alcohol I could not stomach it. I took little sips throughout the night and I was lit from just a few sips! When they closed the bar, the waitress gave us a plastic cup to dump the rest of my drink to take with us. We got up (absolutely trashed) and walked on Alli'i Drive for another hour, while the bf finished up the rest of my drink. This place is really nice. Open air, beautiful scenery (watch the sunset)...right below Royal Kona Resort. Definitely come down here, so worth it!

    Stayed at the Royal Kona resort with my family and this was their restaurant. Went for dinner on all you can eat prime rib night. The dinner was surprisingly good and my wife and son had other dishes that were delicious, too. The service was a little bit on the slow side, but otherwise would recommend this establishment if you are staying at the hotel.

    Go for the view - and that's about it. The open air seating with a fantastic ocean view is enough to make a trip here every time we visit the island. The Mai Tais were hit or miss - some weak, some strong. We tried several other drinks (mojitos, put the lime in the coconut, grogg), all were weak & unimpressive. The service was incredibly (painfully) slow - whether we ordered from the waitress or the bar itself. Staff just seemed flustered in general. And when our bill came, it wasn't correct. There are other places to drink in Kona - but if you're looking for the view & can handle waiting over 20 minutes for a drink, try it.

    Awesome, underrated sunset view with crashing waves below to accessorize. We got there at around 6 pm on a Friday night and got a ledge seat in the bar. Amazing. Pros- fun "flights" of booze (Lava Flow, Mai Tais and Mojitos) Fish taco was surprisingly good Beautiful setting Cons-Happy hour is nothing special, in fact a rip. My happy hr pina colada mix tasted waaay thinner and not as creamy (read: cheaper product) than my full priced one the night before. Is that how they cut costs- use a cheaper mix? And their beer on happy hour ended up being 25 to 75 cents less. No biggie, but don't try to tout it and pass it off as happy hour fodder. Another important and positive note- parking is validates for three hours. Yay!

    The venue is what sets this place apart from other oceanside dining. The sunset and ambiance was great. We arrived just as they were opening for the evening. It was not busy at all. I am not sure if that's the norm or if it was due to the Christmas Parade happening down the block. The wait staff was friendly and courteous. There was a bit of a language barrier but it wasn't incredibly difficult to under our waitress. I ordered a Long Board ($6.75) and my wife ordered an iced tea ($2.95) and 2 glasses of wine ($18). We topped it off with a Pina Colada ($8.50). Drinks were fast. We ordered the Prime Rib ($25.95) and the Ahi Furikake ($33.95). Both dishes were excellent and well presented. The waitress talked us into getting a Double Chocolate Molten Lava Torte, similar to what you can find at a Dominos Pizza. However, this was tremendous! It took the traditional 15 minutes to prepare and was elegantly presented. It was the perfect amount of chocolate at the perfect temperature. I highly recommend you finish off your evening with this dessert. The only thing that probably could have made it better would be two scoops of fresh Vanilla Bean ice cream or even a coconut ice cream. I highly recommend you check out this place for a sunset meal or even drinks. They take reservations.

    Go for the view.. The drinks and food were good but nothing spectacular. We were staying at the Royal Kona Resort and had a 20% off coupon so it gave us good incentive to go there on our last night in Hawaii. I ordered the Surf and Surf with the lobster risotto and while the seafood was fresh and the risotto was tasty, the richness was down right crippling! My wife ordered their fancy version of meatloaf and she ended up having a hard time cutting the meat with a knife even. It was bland and tough, nothing more than a glorified ground beef patty. She did like the side dressing though. One thing that is delicious is the butter that comes with the bread, I would of been happy just eating a couple baskets with that crazy ono butter! All in all this is the place to go for a spectacular view and atmosphere.

    I can't exactly make up my mind about this place, the bar, and the resort it's located in, and the Big Island. The Big Island is in a world of it's own. It is jaw dropping beautiful.... Oops! Enough about the island, i'm here to review Don's Mai Tai Bar! I give the bar 4 stars for an amazing view of the sunset, friendly bartender, yummy sweet girly drinks, and friendly Big Island locals who told us the low down on the sites to see during my short 3 day stay. I got more info about Bis Island sites and activities than form the Hotel's Activities Coordinator. I give the Bar's closing time and the pupus 2 stars. No one told me the fish of the fish and chips would be covered in penko flakes. A simple beer batter would've sufficed. Fish taco was also dry. I believe the bar closes as soon as the sun sets (around 9 or 10). I give the very rude creepo hanging out at the bar zero stars. He was bothering every person he spoke to and as he made his way through the bar to my friend and me, we finally asked the bartender to get security to kick him out.

    Overall, I'd say that I enjoyed dining here. When we got there, every parking lot was blocked off. It looked like you needed a key card or something. Not really sure. We ended up parking down a road by the tennis courts so that was a bit confusing. Other than that, we were pleased with the food, service, and ambiance. We got a great table overlooking the ocean, a really good waiter, and as a bonus, we were looking for a good slice of prime rib and we discovered that Thursdays was "prime rib Thursday" so we got a prime rib buffet for $30! Wooo-hooo! The prime rib was brought to you by your waiter slice by slice and the first slice was very impressive. Very tasty and cooked just how we wanted it. I would recommend Don The Beachcomber if you're visiting the Kona area.

    Rumor is they made the very first Mai Tai at this restaurant/bar back in 1933. The Mai Tais were delicious. I highly recommend the Green Flash Mai Tai if you like sweet and refreshing drinks. If you want to get a buzz going try the Volcano Mai Tai. It's made with Bacardi 151! So be careful. The food was ok and nothing stood out. 5 stars for the drinks. 3 stars for the food.

    Termites on the tables. 20 dollars for pasta with chicken that was completely flavorless. It was like someone just topped it with a can of diced tomatoes. The pork quesadilla was nothing special. Split a purple sweet potato pie. Again nothing special. I think the Good reviews of this place are from people who have had too many maitais.

    One of the best bar views on the island, and possibly the best combo of views and booze. It can get a little damp if it starts to rain sideways, so don't sit at the very edge if it looks like rain - or do, if you don't mind it. I don't want my drinks diluted. Even in the rain, you've got big waves crashing right at the base of the bar, and it's a great place for sunset. Plenty of regular-height tables and seating, and service at the tables. There is a sports TV over the bar but it isn't too loud or distracting if you'd rather look at the sunset, talk, or enjoy some peace. No bathroom of its own, but perfectly accessible ones in the hotel not too far away. As with everywhere on the island (I think they're trying to cover up the smell of mildew) beware of ghastly air freshener and clutch your asthma inhaler. Garrett at the bar is a 5 star cocktail nerd; if he isn't there, I'm sure there are others behind the shakers. Cocktail Snob talked his ear off and had a great time, as well as lots of drinks. I mostly stuck to local Longboard beer, but what I tasted of the cocktails was good and plenty strong. Hawai'i has a law about not having more than one drink on the table ("stacking") so keep that in mind when ordering (Cocktail Snob tends to order his next when he's still got two swallows of his last, and The appetizers, desserts, etc. are the same as the restaurant, so if that's all you want, eat here and enjoy the view. The service may be better anyway. The food wasn't quite up to our standards (see the review of the actual restaurant separately -Don's is the bar, not the restaurant). But the view makes up for it. Second only to the Okolemaluna Lounge in quality, and while I adored Okolemaluna, they don't have history and an amazing view.

    Scenery is beautiful and the Mai Tai's are amazing. The food however was not. My husband got their "catch of the day" swordfish it definitely was not fresh. I made the mistake getting chicken at a mostly seafood place but it did say island favorite. The description reads its marinated with lemons and limes and has a guava and honey glaze. It literally looked and tasted like beef gravy was poured on top not to mention the overpowering salt taste. They were kind to take off bill. Worst food ever!

    We mostly came here for sundown drinks - it's one of the few places right on the rocks on Alii Drive and has unbeatable views. The drinks were good - typical I suppose, and I really like how they had so many various flights (Mai Tai, Mojito, etc). You're best bet is to either get there a good 45 mins ahead of time to ensure you have a drink in hand by sunset, or just go up to the bar and order it. We also came back on our last day and ate here by the pool. The food was better than expected. I had some sort of Beef BBQ sandwich - which was overall good; some of the pieces were a bit fatty so I picked them out - and also ate it as an open-faced sandwich for half of it and the rest just kind of picked the meat out. My BF had the quesadilla which looked good and which he wolfed down pretty quick (hence no sampling for me). There were only a couple of us out at the pool and the service was inexcusably (even for Hawaiian time) slow. Eventually we had to go looking for her because we were too hungry to wait any longer for her to return to us. Everyone there is very friendly, but they definitely lack in speed - not sure if that holds true for dining in the restaurant as well. If nothing else it's a good place for a sunset viewing.

    Well, the location is perfect with beautiful sunsets.....that's about it. OK the mai tai's we're good. Food run of the mill and service marginal. Pretty rare that we give less than 20% tip but this did not deserve it. It was our 38th anniversary and they could care less. Made reservations a week prior to get ocean front table and had to ask several people once we were there to get the table we reserved a week prior. Waaaay better places than this. Mamma Fish House in Maui was the best experience we've had for anniversary dinner.

    The restaurant was 30% full, it still took 10 minutes to get drinks and when the food was ready every member of my party was served except for mine which came 5 minutes later. I had ordered the pork tacos which consisted of microwaved pork with a pile of tasteless cabbage. The view is the only redeeming quality.

    Kohala burger is DELICIOUS! Also, sampler mai tais are worth it. The only thing I'm not a fan of is the service. I had to chase a waitress down after being seated at our table. We waited 10 minutes without anyone coming to serve us. And after I asked her to come over, she had a sour face that lasted the entirety of the meal. Her face didn't ruin the mood too much though; the open-air, oceanfront views and great food redeemed the experience. After all, it's Hawaii.

    What is wrong with people when there are on vacation? Do their tastebuds go on vacation too??? Apart from the amazing view (the only reason this place gets two stars) , this place was a HUGE disappointment. I guess people must be smashed off the mai tais when they review this place bc the food and atmosphere was incredibly underwhelming. We were looking for a nice "adult" dinner away from the kids and came here on a Friday bc of all the great reviews. Yes, the view is amazing and you can easily get a table with a seaside view....bc there is noone else in the restaurant. I was looking foward to ordering steaks and seafood only to be told by the waitress that they only serve the LUAU buffet on Fridays (as of a month ago) and had no ala carte menu. WTF. Oh man, if we weren't starving and hadn't already ordered our drinks I would have left. As a rule I hate buffets bc the food is usually tasteless and overcooked. And this was no exception...it was a tired looking buffet with the standard mass produced luau food of roast pork, poi, chicken teriyaki, rice etc. At the dessert table there were only two sheet cakes of pineapple and coconut. Give me a break - this is the same stuff you get down at the luau by the pool. I'm thinking the hotel was losing money so they laid off the real chefs and just figured they would kill two birds with one stone and offer the luau buffet to the restaurant since they had to cook it for the luau anyways. The waitress seemed almost embarrashed by this. Decor wise, the restaurant looks tired and worn with 50's style Hawaiian theme with grass skirt tablecloths and a huge wooden statue in the center of the restaurant...so borderline tacky it was almost funny. Waiters were friendly but were overworked. They must have laid off some of the waiters too bc the rice at the buffet was constantly empty and our poor waitress was running around serving way too many tables. We had to flag her down for more drinks. She was apologetic and said she was pulling double duty as the cashier too. At least the mai tais were strong but who knows how long this will last before they start watering down their drinks too. Buffet wasn't cheap either...about $35 per person. Save yourself some dough and just order drinks and then head over to Huggos or the Four Season for some real food and even more spectacular views.

    Wow, what a beautiful view and great food. My husband and I had a great, relaxing and romantic dinner at sunset here last night. Our server Margaret was wonderful, knowledgeable and friendly. The prices were not over the top, the food was great, and the view was breathtaking. Sitting there with the waves crashing under you, the sun setting across the ocean, and with good food on the table, you cant ask for a better dinner. If you are looking for a place to relax and enjoy some great food this is your place!

    Yes, the food was much better at Roy's and at Pahu i'a. But we had to drive to both of those spots, and the romance at this place rivals the setting at Pahu i'a. You can't get any closer to the water than this restaurant, and the chairs are insanely comfortable. My husband ordered a shrimp and scallop risotto that he enjoyed. It was heavy, as is often the case with risotto. I ordered a salad that was like a chinese chicken salad without the chicken (perfect for a pescatarian such as myself). If I were to order it again, I would ask for about 1/4 of the amount of dressing that they put on it. Other than that, it was very good. The drinks were fine. My husband and I really felt like we were on vacation when we went here for dinner, so that's why I gave 5 stars.

    All together, we had the Coconut Prawns, Pacific Rim Tacos, Huli Huli Chicken Quesadillas, Shrimp and Chicken Pompdoro, Hawaiian Dip Sandwich, Molten Lava Torte, and a few Mai Tais. The food was all very good, Quesadillas were voted best amongst us. The view is really nice, especially for sunsets.

    We go to this joint as often as we can afford it. The food is top notch, the service always warm, friendly and efficient. Once they see that we are locals who like to eat here, they treat you like family. That gets quite a few points from me. Do what you can to get an outside table by the sea wall. It's the best eating-out-in-Kona that you can have.

    Went in here twice during the week I was on the Big Island. I can't comment on any of the food since we were there strictly for the booze during happy hour. One of the best deals on a great Mai Tai! Our waitress and the bartenders were really terrific, when we said we wanted to see how they made the Mai Tais we were given a great demonstration and provided with the recipe and some great tips. The second trip I had to try their rum sampler; 4 1/2 ounce servings chosen from a long list of fine sipping rums. Now I am more of a single malt guy; Irish or Scotch whiskey typically. The 4 rums I tried were really phenomenal for a mere $14. The bartender also gave me a few good tips for sampling the rum too. Sip about half of each shot neat, then with the remaining half, add an ice cube and a few drops of lime juice and you get another completely different taste experience. The view from the bar is also phenomenally gorgeous, especially if you can catch the "green flash" while sipping your rum.

    BEST mai tais I have had on all the islands...and I have been to all the islands..Garrett the bartender is friendly.. serves up a strong mai tai.. and there are several to choose from. Good happy hour.. starts at 4pm and this is a great place to watch a Hawaii sunset. Would love to see some live music here.. because my friends and I got our mai tai here..and ventured next door to Huggos for music and $3 fish tacos and the same view.. Food here is just average bar fare.. and in fact...I have had a hard time justifying the price when I know whats at Lulus... and Oceans further down the way..Again.. get your mai tai here.. worth it!

    Being a big fan of mai tais (see trader vic's review LOL), I had to try where the original came from. On our last day on the Big Island, the boyfriend and I decided to have lunch here. We chose the mai tai grill over the restaurant for the view and the sun. This place is pretty relaxed. Food was nothing spectacular..although, I enjoyed the crab and scallop chower! The original mai tai was ok.. i guess the bartender for that day didn't have a heavy hand =(. I wasn't disappointed but i wasn't jumping for joy with the mai tai's either. but, good ambiance.

    This review is for happy hour only... The happy hour here is pretty sweet. They have a selection of 1/2 price appetizers (we had the coconut shrimp, which were excellent) and cheap mai tais. It was pretty crowded while we were there, but we scored a table right on the water for the sunset, which was nice. Once happy hour ended, I ordered a lava flow flight - yeah, you heard me, FLIGHT - guava, pineapple, mango, strawberry. YUM. Service was a bit slow, but the atmosphere is so nice and the drinks are so tasty that you won't care.

    Don's claims to have invented the Mia Tia, so we decided go on our last night in HI. We showed up, made our way to the hostess stand. Were rudely asked if we had reservations (no?), were told we'd have to make them (for 30 minutes later, no real big deal). We had them, made our way to the bar & ordered a couple of Mia Tia flights. The bartender was nice & quick. My husband really enjoyed it, I wasn't as impressed. Went over for dinner.... the restaurant part wasn't even 1/2 full, so couldn't make out way the deal with needing reservations. We were ignored for quite a while before our waitress (Marget) came over. Weren't told what specials were, got attitude when I asked what the fish special was. My husband ordered the prime rib dinner & I went with the chicken, that promised to be an island favorite. Boy I was in for a huge disappointment. They replaced the yummy sounding fruit glaze, with a nasty brown gravy. I took a bite all I could taste was salt, tired a few more bites.... salt, salt. After like 4 bites, I couldn't take anymore. My husband finished his meal & when the waitress came by to clear his plate, she asked if I wanted mine boxed up. I told her the problem, was asked if I'd like something else (if she had bothered checking in with us, maybe.... but after my husband was done, nope) & said she'd let her manger know what was wrong. She came back with our bill, said we weren't charged for my meal... the should've been it... But she felt the need to tell me no one has EVER had an issue with the chicken.... basically implying that I was lying & wanting a free meal. One, I had a problem with it & ate not even a 1/4th of my dish- the chef messed up, it happens. It's waitress job to make it better, not worse.... worse service. Would only possibly go back to the bar for drinks... never ever again for the restaurant. BTW I saw (today) someone had the same issues with the chicken, wrong description & too salty chicken, back in July. Fix your menu Don!

    Beachfront dining doesn't get any better than here; oceanfront tables with the best view of the bay. The food is good; not great. I had cioppino, which turned out to be a pasta dish!? The fish was good, but the sauce was chunks of tomato and peppers, without much additional flavor. The crab and scallop chowder was so thick, we used it as a dip for the bread. Crab cakes are delicate and let the crab flavor shine. Prices are $2-30 per entree and $8-10 for appetizers.

    We chose Don's as our last dinner for our vacation on the Big Island and it was a good one. Sit on the balcony with a 180 degree view of the ocean and kailua bay. Look over the balcony and you will see the waves crashing on the lava rocks. Nice modern hawaiian theme decor with tiki torches, tiki gods. Time your dinner reservations with the sunset, you wont be dissappointed. We had the prime rib dinner for 2 that came with sampler appetizer, bottle of wine, and dessert. total was under $80, very fair price. The food was delicious, appetizer to main course. The cheesecake dessert could have been better because the crust was too hard, very minor issue. Overall great experience, great food, great view. FYI, lots of seniors here due to senior specials.

    My husband and I had dinner here during our last Christmas vacation on the Big Island. The place is right by the ocean with plenty of parking (parking is validated at the restaurant). The ambiance is really nice, you can sit outside "on the ring" with an amazing view of the ocean or you can stay inside with some interesting art on the walls. My husband had a prime rib special and I had a pasta with chicken and veggies dish. The prime rib was great, it came with potatoes and steamed veggies and pasta was pretty good too. The size of our meal was pretty big, I wasn't able to eat more than half. We also had a great service, the host took our parking ticket and brought it back to our table and our waiter was extremely knowledgeable and very friendly. I would definitely come back here.

    A lot of people reviewing here are getting two different things confused with one another. In the Royal Kona Resort is a restaurant called Don The Beachcomber. There is also a bar called Don's Mai Tai Bar. These two things are separate and have two VERY different menus. This is a review for the restaurant, Don The Beachcomber: VERY expensive. However, it is very good. The location is amazing. We celebrated our anniversary here this past Saturday. In fact, we chose the Royal Kona resort to stay at based on the pictures online of this restaurant and it's view. I had the filet steak, which was delicious. Hubby had the rotisserie chicken, which must have been pretty darn good cause the guy kept moaning through his meal. lol. You MUST save room for the Chocolate Lava Torte! DELISH!

    We sat at the outdoor bar and ordered a mai tai and a navy grog. I don't know what everyone else is talking about -- there was no mai tai demonstration, certainly no attempt to measure their pours, and a helluva lot of pineapple juice in the mai tai... that sure ain't an original mai tai to me. The navy grog was even worse. Bartender filled the glass 3/4 full with grapefruit juice before squeezing in a light rum, LH 151 and some soda. Helllooooo, what about the lime juice, honey simple, and dark Jamaican? never mind that it's 'sposed to be LH 80 and served with an ice cone. Arrrrrghghghghgh. Didn't have any of the food.

    Ok, I didn't go here for the food. I went here for the bar. I actually went to Don's Mai Tai Bar during happy hour as suggested by a tripadvisor reviewer who suggested getting a dark rum pina colada with a dark rum float during happy hour (4-6pm) and getting Garrett to make it. Sure enough, Garrett was there and he makes the drinks awesomely strong and delicious. Sure enough that drink suggestion was stellar. Try it!

    My fiance and I came here to eat at the Tiki Grill because it was convenient. The restaurant is situated right at the Royal Kona Resort. We were looking forward to a nice breakfast with an ocean view. We got the ocean view. The breakfast was another story. The food was not awful, but it was not spectacular either. I found that they had a very limited menu for a buffet breakfast. I'm a meat lover, and I was disappointed to find that they only offered bacon.....no sausages, ham, or corned beef hash. The restaurant selection did include fresh fruit, scrambled eggs, red potato wedges, cereal, some pastries, juice and milk, but again, there was not a lot of variety like you see in a lot of breakfast buffets. The service was okay, not spectacular, and the price of the buffet was high for the limited selection of food. If you want a restaurant for the view only, this would be your place because it overlooks the water. If you want a restaurant with a large selection of good tasting food, you will be wise to look elsewhere.

    This place is great! Awsome Mai Tai's and appetizers. Get there for happy hour for $5 Mai Tais and half off apps. The pork quesadilla and the sweet potato fries are good. This place is a hidden gem. Walking in feels like your entering Disneyland or some vegas hotel with it's giant statues, fake plants, and colored lighting inside. But then you get to one of the best patios in Kona, with open air seating out on the rocks. Get here in winter to sip on "Pele's Fire" and see the waves pounding the rocks in front of you. This is my happy place.

    We had a great experience here. We came on a Friday night for a dinner buffet special they were having for $28 a person. We got there right before sunset. The place was surprisingly empty so we got what i think was the best seat in the house, a table outside overlooking the ocean. It was beautiful and it was so peaceful listening to the waves crash against the rocks below us. Because it was a buffet, we got to try a lot of different foods we wanted to try like poi, poke, chicken lau lau and coconut rolls. There was also a lot of other food and everything was so good. The coconut rolls were amazing. The mai tais were great and I don't know what it was, but they had the best iced tea i've ever had in my life. Our waitress was super nice, too. I would definitely recommend this place as far as the special dinner buffet and would go again if we make it back to the Big Island.

    Don the Beachcomber was one of the high points of our trip. It was within walking distance from our hotel and had the best view imaginable. It seems corny to say, but the views are breath taking! I loved being outside and hearing/seeing the ocean while we ate. We had a blast watching the luau next door for free while sipping mai thais and eating garlic fries. We didn't feel rushed at all.. it was just really fun and laid back.

    I really liked this bar. We got boat drinks and sat by the pool, overlooking the Ocean. Little did we know that they were setting up for a Luau on the other side of the velvet rope! We had Mai-Tais (great flavor!), daiquiris, draft beers, and coconut shrimp. For several hours of entertainment we just spend a little over 150.00, and we weren't subject to their roast pig, Of course our view wasn't 100 percent perfect, but we saw everything! I mean everything! It was a great show, I almost would have paid for it, but we liked watching from afar, and just putting our hard earned money into the bar for the drinks we liked!     Beautiful view and atmosphere. Style reminiscent of the classic hawaiiana decor of the late 60s early 70s. As far as the food goes you can't get much better in downtown Kona. I had the New York with panchetta wrapped shrimp. It was awesome. Sautéd mushrooms are a must addition to any entree. If you get a chance the bar out front is a prime location for a pre/post dinner drink. Sunsets here are absolutely amazing.

    Great view of the ocean for sunset drinks and food without the high prices of some waterfront Kona establishments. The burgers come with fries and are cooked to order, the quesadillas are yummy (love the sweet Thai chili sauce that comes with it), fish tacos with breaded deep fried ono. The usual assortment of Hawaii cocktails and tropical iced-tea or Kona Brewing Company beer. If you need to drop someone off closer than the parking lot just drive up to the lobby of the Royal Kona Resort, where this place is located, and drop folks off before you park in the pay-for-parking and DTB will validate your parking stub so it'll be free for anyone having food or drink there.

    I've spent the last 10 years of vacations on the Big Island. I am the first to admit the island is a foodie blackhole. However, I liked Don the Beachcomber. First it has a spectacular view of Kailua Bay. Next the food is not expensive for the island. Our dinners have been well prepared and service is very good. Wine, as in most Island establishments, is an afterthought. Don't expect a good list anywhere. For the Island the food is above average, Compared to Honolulu or San Francisco, the food is average. I definitely think it is one of the better eateries in Kailua-Kona.

    It's all about the location!!! Beautiful view of the ocean - you can hear the waves crashing while you enjoy food and beverage. We spent about two hours hanging out here one afternoon and really enjoyed the atmosphere. Open and airy. We ordered the mai tai sampler and found that we actually liked the Green Flash mai tai the best. Which meant we had to order the full sized drink, just to be sure. We got confirmation. Go Green Flash!!! The food wasn't anything special, though I did really enjoy the lilokoi salad dressing. Great flavor.

    SEPARATE REVIEWS FOR BAR AND RESTAURANT!!! BAR- I am not much of a drinker, but decided to relax at the bar, wear a cute dress, and get some mai tais. I am glad I came here. Went for happy hour where well drinks were $5 each for tasty drinks that weren't weak, and not too strong. The mai tais were delicious and I had 2. I then ordered a rum and tonic and it was disgusting. Not the bartenders fault. I just decided to try it for the first time, and wanted to throw up LOL. Wasted $5 on that, but since I don't drink much, it's all good. I came to the bar myself which I am not afraid to do at hotel bars since they aren't the kind of place where you get picked up on. Sat with tourists at the bar with beautiful views of the ocean. Ended up speaking with a nice lady who actually lives near me in LA so that was nice. The bartenders were also very friendly and attentive. One guy told me which snorkeling spots were good, and which were overrated. The other saw me eying the coasters and gave me 4 of them. Best souvenir for myself on this trip! They also have all these drink samples for $15 which look delish. I think I will try them tonight after I go to Mauna Kea. I hope this bar doesn't turn me into a a drunk! Last night I was taking provocative pictures of myself after 2 drinks! 5 STARS FOR THE BAR --------------------------------------------------­------------------------------------------------ RESTAURANT- I came here this morning for the breakfast buffet. I had a 20% off voucher which made the $16 dollar breakfast a bit cheaper. Like someone said here, they have no pancakes or waffles. It was disappointing when viewing it, but I was up at 6:30 and really hungry so I caved in. Just got eggs, toast, pineapple, home fries, and orange juice. They also had bacon, rice, papaya, cereal, bagels, miso soup, and iceberg lettuce. What I ate was fine, but for a buffet, it wasn't particularly great. Service was poor here also. No one gave me water until I stood up and asked for it next to where the servers were. One waitress also insisted that she woud bring it to my table even though I was right next to the water fountain. I actually didn't tip for this place. I got a glass of water only after standing up for it. I usually tip at buffets if I actually have a server, but I didn't here.     Great happy hour and beautiful spot! This is a great place to soak in touristy Hawaii on the cheap. They have a great terrace overlooking the ocean with lounges and even tiki torches. They have the foofi drinks like Mai Tais and a surprisingly good pina colada. As a big fan of going to Kona this is one of my favorite spots to watch the sunset with cocktail in hand. Can't wait to go back.

    Nice restaurant, however a little too wanna-be formal for Kailua-Kona, especially if it's gonna be called a "Grill". Food was good not excellent. Service was very attentive and friendly. We felt that the price point was very high for what was offered. We don't plan to return, because there are plenty of restaurants with better food, at more reasonable prices, that don't act like something they're not. Don't get me wrong I love an occasional formal restaurant but, I wouldn't choose to come here if that was my desire for the evening. On the other hand... their Mai Tai Bar that just outside of the restaurant is EXCELLENT! Best Mai Tai's in town!

    I always forget about this restaurant, but every time I go, I thoroughly enjoy myself. This place has the best view out of all the restaurants on the water, and isn't outrageously expensive. It's not the best food you'll ever eat, but I think that everything we have eaten from there has been decent and above average. They have a great deal for mid-week dining, which is a $70 pre-fixe dinner for two that includes dessert and wine. We partook in the special and both got the prime-rib, which again, was totally decent. Service is always friendly, and it's just generally a nice place to come and get away. I live here, but being in the beachcomber makes me feel like a tourist, in a good way.

    The ONLY reason this place is getting two stars instead of one is that they serve an AMAZING Mai Tai and the view is incredible. Otherwise there is no reason at all to go. My boyfriend and I ate at the bar and ordered a few appetizers. The Ahi Poke was GROSS, the Coconut Shrimp tasted like suntan oil, and the crab cake was bland. But, the worst was my boyfriends "Hawaiian Dip" sandwich, aka a French Dip. It was so nasty and fatty I couldn't believe it. This place was lucky I was tipsy from my delish Mai Tai or else I would have sent the food back. I hope the main restaurant that serves up $40 entrées is better. I recommend going for DRINKS ONLY.

You can literally look down from your table and see the waves crashing onto the black rocks below. The sunsets on any of the Hawaiian islands are just breathtaking and you can watch it while eating dinner at Don the Beachcomber. If you're there early enough you can see the sunset from your seat at dinner. On Thursdays the special is all you can eat prime rib which I had. My husband had the seafood special. Both were great. Our server was very pleasant, prompt and knowledgeable. Bussers were efficient. The whole experience was just superb. This is a package deal. Food, drinks, service and ambiance. Don't pass this place up if you're in Kona. The only reason for four stars is the hostess desk. We stayed at the Royal Kona Resort which is attached to Don the Beachcomber. I walked up to make a dinner reservation and the hostesses were arguing amongst themselves. Ignoring me to quibble over whatever it was they were angry about. I had to wait until they were done arguing to be acknowledged and to place my reservation.

    Best Mai Tai ever! The prices are pretty high, but Happy Hour makes it okay. The views are the best with the crashing waves and the watching the sunset while you sip on the Mai Tai. Their breakfast buffet is the best in Kona too--again with the great view of the bay and crashing wave while eating your portuguese sausage and eggs...good times!

    Please note that I went to Don the Beach Comber Bar and Lounge, not the restaurant. With that said, this place has an awesome view of the ocean and is outdoors. Their service is incredibly friendly, and the overall atmosphere here was great. Came here twice around sunset and during happy hour. With the great view available at this place, I was hoping to see the "green flash" during sunset, unfortunately the clouds in Kailua-Kona cover the horizon during sunset almost everyday. Ordered the original mai-tai, a pina-colada, a mai-tai variation, and a few beers. Their beer selection is okay, and the original mai-tai is probably the way to go. For entrees, my dinner date ordered a manga salad (~$14) which tasted fresh, however the avocados were unripened and hard. I ordered their burger and yam fries (~$12) which was really good, and probably one of the best burgers I've ever had. I have to give 5-stars for the ocean setting, 4-stars for the burger, 1-star for my dates mango salad, and 3-stars for the drinks.Overall, this place is a great hangout, it's next to the ocean and the food and drinks are decent, just don't get the mango salad. I highly recommend hanging out here in the late afternoon while staying in Kailua-Kona.

While dining here, you get to witness finches and doves flying about trying to steal food. How they keep the bird crap out of the food still befuddles me.

    After we ordered we saw a roach crawling under our table. One of the staff saw it and stepped on it. For 10 minutes a dead roach sat by our table. When we brought this to our servers attention she kicked it to a corner. It was kind of disgusting.

    I would avoid this place. The service ranges from bad to awful. For example, on my first visit, the bartender actively avoided me for almost 10 minutes before I decided to leave and go elsewhere. On a subsequent visit where we had a server, it took forever to get overpriced drinks that were essentially virgin drinks. Like we're talking 25 minutes to get 4 drinks. The only shining star from this place was a cheese flatbread thing on their appetizer menu for $8. It was actually pretty good. Everything else from here was awful including the mai tai sampler everyone on Yelp is apparently drooling over.

    It's sad that I actually have to give this place 1 star! We went for the breakfast buffet on a Thursday and I would dare to assume that inmates eat better than this. I am in the Navy and have had better meals when at sea for up to 2 months. It was $55 for three people, the eggs were runny, hash browns were almost solid mash, coffee tasted like tar and the only reason they got 1 star was because the fruit was edible.

    This place has a beautiful view! You can't get any better than ocean front. But asides from the view I found their happy hour to be more than reasonable, considering it is right in the heart of Kona on Ali'i Drive. I love to cook so I amounts the stickler when it comes to the taste and quality of food. I was worried. With some of the reviews saying the food was mediocre and that you were paying for the view but I have to say that everything we had, drinks and food was on point! My piña colada was better then I expected and I loved it. I did ask them to make it less sweet. We had the ribs, coconut shrimp and Island style quesadilla. The coconut shrimp was THE best I've ever had, I'm not the biggest fan of shrimp but the flavor was perfect. The ribs were tender and moist, the quesadilla itself was great, my only criticism was with the hot and sweet sauce it came with, which made it "island style" it was ok but I would prefer it without that sauce, it stood well on its own. That being said that same sauce also came with the shrimp and it was amazing! Definitely highly recommend this place for happy hour! As far as our server goes he was decent, nothing above and beyond and he actually charged us for an extra drink we didn't get. But we let him know and he took it off.

    Visitor friendly place, if you are having drinks and/or appetizers in the bar , they allow your children to swim in the pool!!! Only place I have found that this is allowed, big plus. Dinning in the restaurant is great as well. Food is excellent, view one the waterfront is amazing. Although this resort is a bit dated in appearance it makes up for it in service and quality.

I tried the lava flow sampler and he had the Mai tai sampler - also good! The service was good, too. We went back last night for drinks and Cary took care of us at the bar. He's a great bartender!     Four stars based on the strength of their location, facility and bar alone. Don't go here for food, go here for drinks, eat if you are starving. *Note-This review refers only to the bar and bar dining menu, not their dining room. Pros: 1) The facility at the bar is amazing. It is beautiful, beautiful, beautiful. Open air, varied seating from sofas, bar high top, dining tables or bar seating, natural feeling. It is ON the water, nicely appointed and very "island" feeling. It is not overly fancy, you can come straight from the beach and not feel out of place. It has a vintage tiki decor in the dining room, which is awesome. Really cannot say enough about how inviting and lovely the space is. 2) Drink are very good. I have been here many times, the drinks have always been excellent. I posit they have the best Mai Tais on the island and I really don't like Mai Tai's. All other drinks have been excellent. They have an extensive cocktail menu of fruity, islandy drinks. Not weak nor too strong. Cons: * Drinks are not the cheapest, but also not the most expensive. * The food is somewhere on the lower end of average * Service is usually average for the island (island service is not noted for being super attentive), though I have had better and worse, depending on the individual.

    Since I was rather unhappy with last years dinner on the 4th, it seems only fair to update and report on our experience this year on the 4th. I am happy to say that the experience this year was vastly improved. I think they had more staff, and service was much better, water glasses filled promptly etc. It was noticably packed with locals for the fireworks. The fourth was a Thursday this year, coincidentally when they have an all you can eat prime rib deal. One of our table enjoyed that immensely, having first 8 ounces and then two four ounce pieces; they'll keep bringing it until you're full. I had the surf & surf, which was shrimp and scallops, and they were delicious. Our server Douglas was attentive, and we enjoyed the fireworks immensely, you can tell the economy is improving by the length of the show. And if you are over 50 there is a discount. I started with their signature mai-tai, which was pretty enough to snap a picture of to text to a friend on the mainland that is a mai tai afficionado. At $9 it wasn't unreasonable. The surf & surf was $36, again not unreasonable for oceanfront dining. Overall I was much happier with our experience this year, and hope this is a sign of things to come from Royal Kona / Don's..... I felt that they deserved this update, With so much competition from ocean front dining establishments, it is good to feel that they have improved in the areas that I complained about last year.

    On Thursday, February 26, 2015 we went to Don's in order to hear Cyril Pahinui. We arrived at about 4:00. First, after findng our table, we did not even get a menu for probably 20 minutes, then we got the dinner rather than the bar menu. Finally we got the proper menu and ordered nachos and a bottle of wine. The nachos were terrible, probably pre-made and then zapped. They were not the same as ones we had had a couple of weeks before. Also, every drink was served in plastic glasses. Totally unnecessary in my opinion. Then to top it off, it was not Cyril Pahinui after all. It was a trio, no doubt with a relative of Cyril's, but it just was not as billed. I grew up in Hawai'i, singing Hawaiian songs, and I was awfully disappointed. Too much hapa haole stuff, and even the Iz song, Over the Rainbow. Not a good idea to try and copy Iz. Finally, Don's obviously expected an overflow crowd, but there was not the extra wait staff to accommodate that expectation. All in all, though, Don's is still our favorite seaside bar. We just would never go back on a Thursday evening.

    This bar is in a major hotel but has amazing views and strong drinks that are not crazy expensive. Happy hour is the perfect time to check it out because they have food and drinks at awesome prices. I had the Mai Tai sampler which was a perfect way to figure out which Mai Tai I liked. To say they were strong is an understatement but it wouldn't be a Mai Tai if it wasn't right?! The Bucket of Shrimp was a really great snack to share between the four of us. The trio of sauces are tasty but not even necessary because the shrimp are so good. Pulled Pork Sliders are a must! The roll is soft and has a hint of coconut and the pulled pork is yummy and perfectly accompanied by the slaw that is layered on top. The Pork Quesadilla was good but not crazy memorable The ribs were also good but again not my favorite. Even if you are not staying at this hotel you can hit up the bar. Just get your parking ticket validated and you should be able to park for free!

    Americans who have been sheltered from travel may not realize that cookie cutter grid mapped cities with chain stores and box malls are a phenomenon invented and ubiquitous only in the states. Despite the fact that Hawaii has been a state for a short 56y., the urban machine has wasted no time planting its fast food and fast resorts across the geographic landscape, yet there are a few authentic Hawaiian establishments. You can find that uniqueness here. A bit of an east meets west post moderne structure with decidedly island style tribal decor, it is truly unlike any other. I can't speak for the service or accommodations but the drinks are strong and the people are warm, between the two you can leave the sweater and lipstick at home and come with just your carefree smile.

    This review is for the bar, not the grill. I'm assuming they're related but even when I called the front desk to ask if the beachcomber was open, they said no. Apparently the grill is only open Thursday through Saturday but they neglected to tell me the bar was open (which was what I was interested in anyway)! Definitely get the Mai tai sampler to start. Do not order a Mai tai until you do. We figured since they invented the drink, it would be amazing but I found it to be way too strong and not enjoyable to drink. We got a flight and I enjoyed all the others except for the original. We also got their piña coladas which were very very good. Light taste and creamy. We ordered the bucket of shrimp and the nachos. The nachos were on point and I recommend them. The shrimp also had great taste and came with interesting sauces. However, the bucket was so large but filled 80% with ice and not with shrimp which was disappointing. It's not that I expect them to fill an entire bucket with shrimp because that would be wasteful and expensive, but if you serve it in such a large bucket and the shrimp is just sitting in a layer on top, how could you expect your customers not to be disappointed?

Ordered nachos, which is a dangerous dish depending on where I have it. Some places have plain and forgettable nachos.     We went for happy hour and it's definitely a 65+ crowd. They had live music by a gentlemen in his 80s singing and playing xylophone. My favorite point in the evening was when he said "this one's for the young folks in the crowd!" as he begun his rendition of Gloria Estefan's "Conga". He was a hoot. I am rating 3 out of 5 because the drinks were pretty weak for the price you pay for them, even at happy hour. The food was mediocre. I liked the coconut shrimp but the burger on the happy hour menu was WAY too greasy. I used a napkin to soak the grease off and it still was coming down my hands during my attempt to eat it. This is a place where you're paying for the experience. The cocktails are fun and the views of the ocean-outstanding. But the happy hour food was meh. However, It may be better during actual dinner or breakfast.

    I stayed at the Royal Kona Resort so I checked out Don the Beachcomber, a restaurant and bar located on the premises. It has limited hours (no lunch) and dinner is served three nights a week. The place offers a daily breakfast buffet, which is what I tried. It's a typical breakfast buffet with eggs, bacon, pancakes, cereal, etc. There is also fresh fruit and orange juice. The view is amazing. The restaurant is open-air and breezy, with the occasional bird flying in. The oceans waves are relaxing and the atmosphere is pretty nice. A bit overpriced, but the quality of the food was good. There are other locations in the vicinity offering breakfast at lower prices, so I'll likely visit them for the remainder of my stay.

    My wife and I had dinner last night as we have many times in the past. Last nights Prime Rib was sub par. My wife ordered an end cut as usual and it was rare. She sent it back and when it returned it was slightly better done but burned on the outside. We told the waitress and she sent the manager over and he proceeded to excuse the kitchen.     Previous time we visited Don's, it was great. It proclaims to be the best (or at least original) Mai tai on the island! We were so excited to return!     Sweet Jesus, the view. THE VIEW. We had lunch on the patio on a Tuesday afternoon and were super happy. The boy had a burger and he was satisfied.     My wife and I went here on a whim for a date night. We got the two person special that came with an appetizer, two entrees, a bottle of wine, and a desert. Overall, more pros than cons. PROS: The patio seating and view were amazing. The food was mostly very good (we both loved the panko/macadamia nut crusted ono and the seared ahi). The service started out kind of shaky, but the waitress came through for us in a big way when she went out of her way to get some items switched on the sampler platter due to my wife's allergies. The bus boy was the most attentive water filler I have ever seen. CONS: House wine was awful. A wedding going on at the hotel disrupted what would have otherwise been a quiet atmosphere (though this ended up being somewhat entertaining, so maybe a pro after all).
